 SENIOR SCHOLARS
Current Events
January 26, 2024 -
February 2, 2024
  Dear Subscriber                                Member Until:

From Jane Howard, 2024 President …

This Friday, please look for me in the front of Wolfe Hall near the podium. Arrive by 9:30 to share coffee, hot tea and doughnut holes while getting to know other members, guests and officers. The presentation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Our speaker, Tate Nurkin, will be presenting through zoom. If you are a new member, please consider volunteering in order to get to know more of our members. That’s what I did after I retired the end of 2018. Now my husband and I have an additional circle of interesting friends we have met through Senior Scholars.

Membership renewals for 2024 are well underway. If you are one of the 397
2023 members who have still not  renewed, please do so now. Renewing
on our website is quick and easy with a credit card, or you may mail in a check to our Queens University address.

If you have not renewed by February 16th, you will no longer receive our weekly emails.

RENEW NOW

We’ve recently noticed that a few of our
members enter into Wolfe Hall without displaying their new orange 2024
membership cards.

As we welcome you into Wolfe Hall, we ask that you have your orange 2024
membership card visible at the entry for us to verify.

If you do not have an orange 2024 membership card, please do one of four things:
1. If you renewed online, your new card may be picked up at the table with membership cards.
2. If you need to renew, do so at the membership desk with a $25 renewal payment.
3. Attend as a guest, with the payment of a $5 guest fee.
4. If you wish to join for the first time, pay $35 which includes your name tag and membership fee.

January 26
Tate Nurkin
AI and National Security
(Speaker by Zoom in Wolfe Hall)

Our final January speaker on January 26 will be another Great Decisions
Speaker, Tate Nurkin, who was originally scheduled to present to us last fall.
His topic is AI and National Security, a compounded matter that is often before
us in the news. Nurkin is a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s
Forward Defense and Indo-Pacific Security Initiative in the Scowcroft Center
for Strategy and Security. He is also the founder of OTH Intelligence Group.

February 2
Gene Stowe
Author of Inherit the Land

Our February 2 speaker will be author, Gene Stowe. He graduated from UNC
in 1975, graduated from Lutheran Theological Seminary in 1983, reported for
the Charlotte Observer from 1981-93, was head of the writing and religion
program for Trinity Schools in South Bend, IN from 1993-2012, and became a
free-lance writer in 2013.

His topic is based upon his book: Inherit the Land: Jim Crow Meets Miss Maggie’s Will. Two antebellum white spinster sisters in Marvin, NC, raised a Black man and then his daughter as their own beginning in Reconstruction.

The women left them their 800-acre homeplace, a will upheld against all odds
by two White juries in Monroe in the 1920’s. The personal relationships and
economic empowerment left Marvin virtually untouched by Jim Crow to this
day.

New Member Orientation

Pam Nemechek and her Membership team will provide all the details of how to
become a well-informed and involved Senior Scholars member.
